Lampblack.  AKA soot.  Don't know how tarry it is, but it definately sticks to glass.

No caffeine in tea?  Where did you come up with that?  AFAIK, there is caffeine in tea.  Also theobromine, and probably a lot of other stuff as well.

I think you're probably right but more than soot will form. The furnace guy 
called it creosote but it's probably a tarry carbon gunk based stuff that 
only looks like creosote.

It's like saying Tea has caffeine. Technically it's not caffeine but it's 
close enough to be a quibble unless it's a technical discussion.

Frosty,
Natural gas will certainly form soot under the right (wrong?) conditions. 
But did you mean to say it would form creosote?  I don't think so.
