FWIW, there is a company near Daytona that I was able to buy railroad  
axle cut into three 36" PIECES 	for somewhere in the neighborhood of  
$200. I don't know if they are still open and available...but it's a  
potential option. Really saved me some money when I built some simple  
air hammers a few years ago.
