Ti is tough but not particularly hard, it is difficult to sever a
chip from it when compared to easier to machine metals. But one of
the main reasons it eats drills and cutters for lunch is that its
thermal transfer characteristics are horrible and the spot heating at
the cutting edge anneals your tools edge rapidly and also welds Ti to
the cutting edge neither of which are good for the cutting process.
Flood coolant makes cutting Ti much easier. Also rigid high HP
machine tools help a lot.
It does work harden rapidly but it is workable cold. Hot working is
much easier but compromises the mechanical characteristics of the
surface material.
