Hi Justin,
To begin with, H.F.sells two different darkening hoods. All that I've heard
spoken against them is that their electronics can "stick" when the
temperature gets cold enough. ANSI Z87.1-2003 Table 3 goes into testing for
this problem pretty thoroughly, so I'd say it isn't rare. If you're having
the problem, you know it, if not you're probably just fine.
