Jeff, how big is that table? How much does the slab weigh? Four pcs of 1/2"
for each leg should hold 18" x 36". If you can get the customer to let you
run horizontal braces around it or at least put in scrolls as corner braces
it would be even stronger. We built a steel table to hold a 1,000 gal
aquarium in a restaurant. It was a massive thing that I figured had to hold
8,000 # of water plus the weight of the glass,( with a 4" freeboard) rocks
and gravel. I didn't think of the weight of the fish but they displace the
weight of their volume in water anyway, so I guess the water level would
rise by a grilla-greeter or so.....

Subject: [TheForge] Baskets
Hey All,
I have a job where I need to make some table legs, they need to be stout
to keep a granite top from swaying. The legs will have no cross support
other than at the top, although the bottom of the legs will be anchored
into the floor. The client wants, maybe rope legs with a basket in the
middle. I was thinking a basket made from at least 4 stands of 5/8"
solid round (mild steel). The legs maybe 2-3 inch in diameter, twisted
from several strands of solid round mild steel. No problem getting the
twisted material for the main body of the legs but I have not found a
source for a basket made from such "massive" material. Any suggestions?
I have a source for baskets made from 4 strands of 1/2" solid round, and
maybe after I weld and wrap to hide the welds, the legs will be resistant
to swaying?
BTW I don't have the tools or capacity to make baskets out of 5/8" solid,
or maybe I do?
Thanks,
Jeff in Phoenix
