Another point regarding unions that should be mentioned:
 
As Franklin Roosevelt sought greater control regarding re-election, WWII,  
etc., he found that encouraging greater union enrollment allowed him to capture  
huge voter populations through a single entity. If he gained the UAW support, 
 for example, he would elicit the votes and approval of millions of citizens  
through a singular channel. Much easier to deal with a single John L. Lewis 
than  with 8 million voters. 
 
And so it has gone....
