A few years ago my friend built a mansion in the Phillippines
(Manilla) and was videoing the progress of the building. They videoed
3 workers welding their massive metal gates on location. Two of them
held the pieces together (averting their eyes) whilst the third
welding without a mask waved his hand infront of his face with his
fingers spread. That was his protection.. a waving spread hand.
Apparently these welders have very short careers as cataracs form
rather quickly until they eventually go completely blind. My friends
father bought them masks but the welder never used his complaining
that he couldn't see anything. True story... they still have the
video!!
