When i welded up the anvil for my treadle hammer, it was a whole
bunch of discarded scraper blades stood on end and packed
together and welded from hell to breakfast to be as solid as
possible. The rod was from several 50# cans of ugly WW2 surplus
leftovers. The day was hot and the fume content of the rod was
unknown so i set up outside, running the cables out the door.
The pile was clamped together nice and high so i wouldn't have to
stoop over. Set up a pneumatic chipping hammer right there so
chipping out the beads was quick.
It was hot but i wore a long sleeve cotton shirt for protection
and Cranked the old welder way up welded till dark.
Cotton wasn't enough.
By bedtime i had a single blister from my diaphragm to my neck.
Burns are an authoritative teacher.
I think the point my friend intended when he told about the blind
welders was that people were more disposable there...pete f
