Bruce,
You should leave them high resolution. Your editor needs all the bits that
he can get when he publishes your article. If he decides to crop, zoom, or
otherwise enhance the pictures he can only go as far as the resolution will
let him, don't tie his hands.

So, my current problems are over. I downloaded Irfanview. I can't
speak to it's other features, but the thumbnail feature is great. You
can choose what size you want displayed, and display an entire directory
at once. Somehow it knows whether to orient the photos portrait or
landscape.
Progress on the article is rapid.
I may even try resizing the photos and including them in the document,
directly. But that's for later.
