We went to an estate auction today, only 4 miles from my home farm: the
auction site of a "century farm" .. same family since 1901 without ever
seeing an auction gavel. There was lots of horse equipment, and tons of old
tools. I bought more than my share <g>.
I bid on a couple anvils today but came in 2nd on both.
I bought another hand grinder today at the estate auction, and tonight, I
posted it for sale on EBAY. I paid $10 for the grinder on a "choice" grab.
This one should work well with either a 6 inch stone, or a 6 inch brass wire
brush.
I also bought a cool shorty post vise. It has 4 inch jaws that are almost
pristine <new> looking under the light to moderate rust. The vise is 16
inches top to bottom and about the same front to back. Threads were still
well greased, and looked like it had seen very little use. This vise looks
to me it would be a great farrier's / traveling blacksmith's post vise.
I didn't find any markings on it. I have collected half a dozen good post
vises, but this is the first "shorty" that I have seen.
Back to the hand bench grinder: it doesn't appear to me that this one has
ever been allowed to get much rust on it. Some of the green paint started
to show through when I cleaned some of the dirt off to try and read the
writing on the castings.
Ebaylisting with 5 photos:
Item number: 7405977164
blacksmith hand crank bench knife grinder tool
Selling with No Reserve, Antique easy turning hand grinder. Current abrasive
wheel has about 5 inches remaining. Grinder apparently takes 6 inch grinding
stones. I see no breaks or cracks in the grinder machine castings. The wood
handle and the metal bracket on the bottom are in good condition. The Large
Cast Gear box is 8 inch diameter. Crank side says Artisan No 6. The Grinder
side says Pike MFG CO. Pike NE (Nebraska)

P.S.
My ears were kind of red the other day. Thought I was posting off list, to
just Dan Kretchmar... OH well.
