[TheForge] Bridge Crane

John,
It seems you and I are at the same stage in designing a shop, and the same
span on the crane. I have looked into a bridge crane, as I want the
convienience it offers. The down side is nothing can hang from the ceiling
in it's path like electric lines etc.
I have gone to several commercial crane sites, and found that they want big
bucks for a new crane, and won't talk to you unless you want it motorized.
I am looking for a used one, or will assemble one myself. How hard can it
be? McMaster-Carr sells end trucks for the bridge. You need to build
brackets to support the rails and decide if you want underhung or top
running. Underhung is suitable for general light (regarding frequency) use.
You will need to engineer the size of the beams for the span and loads. I
would suggest looking at cranes in your area to scope out the beam sizes
used.
Anyone else have any input regarding this, or know of any cranes for sale?
A question for Justin, can you describe the tables a bit more. How heavy, on
what type of base, how clean and true is the surface, when do they need to
be moved ........
