Are the bearings free and well greased? Are the pulleys worn? If your 
pulley is worn the belts will not ride in the proper place to drive. 
They drive on the sides not the bottom. Then you over tighten the belt 
to try to get it to work. Replace pulleys.

Belt drive is good cuz the belts will slip in case of interference.

You should be able to get good belts at your local farm store.
