[TheForge] andiron bar replacement

Hi Jay.  I just visited a friend in St. Paul.  His son just bought a
2-burner Forgemaster gas forge.  The body is steel with the front top a
piece of angle iron.  This is scaling badly and probably won't last long.
Do you think this surface would be a good application for the ITC-123?

Don,

The ITC-213 will help, but the metal should be recoated when the coating 
shows wear. It will still extend the part life if not recoated, but will 
greatly extend the life of the part if the coating is maintained. Think 
of it like paint on outdoor iron work. If the paint is not maintained 
the iron will start to rust out. It the finish is maintained the work 
can out last the maker.

 ITC-213 has a higher melting temperature than steel and bonds to the 
metal surface on a molecular level. It helps minimize the temperature 
differential between the hot side and cold side of the part, thus 
lowering thermal stress that causes microscopic  surface cracking. At 
the same time the coating protects the surface from the oxidation that 
causes the metal to scale and flake away. It might not let the andirons 
bars last indefinitely but it will keep them working longer.
