You dont have to reinvent the wheel every time...
The tumbling/deburring industry makes a product for this- it is a 
detergent mix, which costs something like 20 bucks a gallon. You mix it 
at about 20 to 1 with water, and it keeps the metal from rusting, lubes 
the tumbling medium, and does not leave a greasy coat that would 
interfere with welding or painting.
There are a bunch of companies that sell deburring supplies, and I bet 
MSC or McMaster would sell this stuff as well.
Personally, I just bought a 50 pound box of ceramic tumbling media, and 
a gallon of this detergent, about 12 years ago, and I havent run out of 
either yet-
