[TheForge] Nasty Slack Tub now sealer

Grant, I used to use a slide on tip to an acetylene torch for paddling
lead - so it would be a very soft flame like your suggesting. The flame was
set to slightly reducing like you mentioned also - just a whisp of a tail on
the cone. Mapp may burn hotter and cleaner so edge tinning may go better
that way.........don't know - never tried it.

Ralph: Thanks for the reply....we seem to be on the same page re metal
thickness/weight. The original panel was to be 9 feet wide by 3 feet high.
This panel would feature pierced decorations (cut outs) a la gothic revival.

I had also spoken with my welding supplier about using paste solder in any
gap between panel and frame. He thought this would work, provided you used
a soft (oxygen free) flame to flow the solder into the gap. He suggested a
reducing flame of acetylene and I'm thinking MAPP gas with a soldering tip
on a bernzomatic propane torch...kind of like auto body work. Any thoughts?

Grant, Sorry for the late reply - but I've been on the road and this was
recieved the day I left. The seam sealer I mention is used in the
automotive industry and auto body shops. It's big thing is it's capilary
action that creeps into seems (of the spot welded sheet metal in
automobiles). It is best used in tight areas where the material sets up and
seals the joint from air and water. If there are a lot of open edges - this
will not work real well.

I've found sheet in the 14 - 10 guage range easy to cut for decorations and
lighting.....but if you have to weld to the middle of it in any way - 3/16
is a way to cut heavy distortion - that seems to be the breaking point of
having enough heat sink to work against. Strictly decorative inset the
panel should be lighter than 3/16.

Never considered solder as a seam sealer - did it work out well?

Ralph (or any others): Good advice on the sealer. Question: I'm working
on a gate of 9' length and 6'height, which will have an inset metal panel of
9'x3' I'm planning to decorate the panel with piercings (shapes cut out w/
plasma cutter, leaving negative space openings. I'm thinking of sealing the
edges of the panel, where it mounts inside the gate frame, with lo-melt
solder after MIG welding the panel in place. Any opinions? Also, what
thickness of sheet would you recommend for the 9'x3' panel? Grant l

Mike, do yourself a favor - go get the gas and use hard wire, you'll like it
much better. Get the ER70S6 and it will run and flow out real nice for you
on sheet work. Trick with sheet is tack weld all sides/edges, then run
beads - or if real thin and distorting just stich weld to keep distortion
down and use seam sealer(comes in caulking gun and creeps into joint to seal
it - it's what the factory uses - only they spot weld).

Sorry I couldn't make Can-Iron, was really looking forward to meeting you.
I had a killer job going on a water powered sawmill and had to finish it up
before heading out to Minnesota today.

I once purchased a 50 gal whiskey barrel from the local cider mill and
had 30 gal. of cider put in. Some good cider, my son! I later was
told that the wood of the barrel held about 1 gal of whiskey, so as
the cider equilibrated with the whiskey, I was getting a 30:1 or
better cocktail.

Ob. Smithing: Finally broke down and bought a MIG welder. Don't have
the gas tank yet so I'm using flux core. I figure by the time I've
welded all the patches on my rusty '87 F-150, I'll know how to use the
thing.
