As a former software guy I feal I must respond.  A gender bender is a
hardware solution to a hardware problem. I wrote protocol interfaces for 25
years and at some point you have to say it can't be fixed in software.  Most
of the hardware guys that I've worked with would option for a hand full of
jumper wires.

You can tell him he is wrong, if he wants to pull something that he doesn't
own.  If he is content to live in his own little world he can do anything he
wants.  He could even wire in household outlets if nobody else needs to
connect up to it.
