I said, with a HAMMER.  If you can compress atoms with a hammer, even if "not easily", you ought to let the cold fusion boys know about it.  Might get a grant for a few hundred thou...

Well not easily, and when you do you get a rather large explosion. A  
small fission weapon is used to overcome the force that holds the  
hydrogen atoms apart in a fusion weapon. Compresses Atoms> Fusion > Bang
