the reason for the reference to using  old/broken hockey stickts for hammer 
and tool handles was the quality of the wood.  The wood that makes a good 
hockey stick also makes a good hammer handle.

 The fact that the hockey stick is already roughly the right size and shape 
and rectangular is just icing on the cake.

Too bad they don't play more hockey in MD.  Got my relatives in Mass 
watching for used hockey sticks for me.
