With simple carbon steel the higher the carbon content the lower the welding
temp.
I can weld improved plow steel cable at 2100 F.
When I used to take classes at Campbell folk school Chuck Patrick used to
amaze me with his Mark I eye ball.
He could read a forge color temp to within 50 F and sometimes within 20 F.
