[TheForge] Forge temps (was: biodiesel)

With a pure metal, melting tells you temperature. Unfortunately, with carbon steel or other alloys, the picture can get VERY complicated. See: http://abana.org/resources/education/tempil_guide.shtml
Do ceramic cones come in these temperature ranges?

I haven't accurately measured the temp in my forge.
Does just melting steel count?
When one of my students gets to the point they get preoccupied with prep,
chatting, etc. and forget to keep an eye on the forge I quietly up the prop
reg to around 12-15psi. It'll melt a few inches off 1/2" sq. stock in under
a minute.
Black hot to bubbling puddle.
My burners are about $9 worth of plumbing, lamp rod, a brass fitting and a
.045 mig tip.

If it ain't forged
it ain't real.
Wrought iron is.
