Bill,
Without knowing your heat losses, you can't calculate what BTU you'll need
but some advice. The problem with a stove is they heat where they are and
little else. Fans and some sort of delivery system to move the heat to the
perimeter would help but it's all a matter of money.
What you can do is insulate, especially the ceiling. Put the stove near to
your work but not so close that you'll over heat. I like it behind me.
Build a banked fire at night to maintain some heat. Coal will bank better
but if you have hardwood and a tight stove that you can control the air on,
a couple of good logs will last the evening.
If you do burn coal, make sure the grate will work with it.

Subject: [TheForge] Heating with woodstove OT
Greetings,
Working on outfitting my shop with a wood or coal burning stove to provide
heat to roughly 1400 sq. ft. with 14' high ceilings. Does anyone have any
rules of thumb or solid info on how many BTU's I need, fan assisted, etc? I
found a reasonable stove on ebay that seems like it would work. Any help
appreciated. Ebay # 5976365737.
Regards,
