[TheForge] Euroanvils

I have an Old World Anvil (www.oldworldanvils.com), one of the Habermann
460 pound ones... The face is a bit soft, but seems to work harden
decently. But I really like the big anvil a lot! And it certainly is
big!
I just started going over the Euroanvil's face with a smallish ball peen
hammer to work harden it. After I finish that, I'll go over it again
with a larger ball peen, and then use it some more. (Right now it's too
easy to mar the surface if I miss the work piece, so I've been using the
Harbor Freight 110 pounder more than the big one. It's definitely a soft
face, but, for now, it works fine.)
I've been really happy with it, especially considering the price! I got
it for about $1,200, plus a little for shipping. Shipping wasn't too bad
either because I could use my work place's docks to pick up the anvil,
and avoided having to pay extra for a lift-gate truck to deliver it to
my house. I'm not saying it's a perfect anvil, but it's been a very good
value for the money. Seemed like good guys, too.

I the folks I have talked to that have these anvils like them -- but
they do
say they are just a bit soft. I understand they are around a Rockwell C
of
48. They are a cast mag steel and will work harden so the surface will
get
better with use and some level of shallow dressing. I don't have one
but it
is on my list.
