An old dodge for welders arc welding potentially explosive tanks was to 
direct the exhaust from their gas welders into the tank to displace any 
oxygen with essentially inert gases.    You need a long hose to make 
sure any sparks are out by the time the exhaust gets to the tank.   Even 
then, explosions do ocur.
