In the book "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson, there is a great character 
who glass knapps knives, which of course do not set off metal 
detectors- he is the eskimo hit man- there isnt a step by step how to 
do it, but there is some great action sequences involving the glass 
knives.

worth checking out for a modern interpretation of how hand knapped 
knives will still be useful in the future.
