Agreed Phlip. "As it appears" in the woodcut this wouldn't be very stable at 
all, even after the pope's servants cleared and leveled the ground.

However, woodcuts aren't blueprints or even working drawings, they're more 
like concept sketches. There is almost never a sense of scale or perspective 
in most woodcuts. This one is actually pretty good.

Legs are represented on the "A" frames and I'm sure the good smiths of the 
time were wise enough to make them large enough to be effective
. Failing that I'm sure the first cook to get scalded would do some 
educating. Heck, if it was the pope's favorite cook it could've gotten VERY 
hot for the smith. <grin>
