The more weight, the better.
Maybe the correct phrase would be 
The more mass, the better.

Pick up a hefty 3 or 4 pound hammer and start whacking on a 45 pound anvil.
Now, using the same hammer and the same force, attack a 300 pound anvil.

"real" hammer manufacturers use a range of 10:1 all the way to 20:1
for the ratio between anvil weight and hammer head weight. 
You can make the base plate a lot bigger than the plans call for, just don't
go smaller.

I calculated the weight difference between the 1.25"
and the 1.5" plate for 16" X 41", and it's only 47
pounds.  Is that enough of a difference in the base
plate to matter?
