I just bought a 7.5HP vfd, 3 in, 3 out. I bought it after talking to the 
manufacturer's applications engineer. He told me that they don't 
recommend it, but people do all the time. Their units (Danfoss) tend to 
only work up to about half load when run on single phase. There is a 
parameter I can set which may get me above this point. I don't really 
expect to ever hit it; even with two machines on at the same time (I 
have two hands, right?), I'll only consume 3-4HP.
