Under 5 HP VFDs will usually work on single phase input but you have to
de-rate them by about 30% unless they are rated for single phase/3 phase.
They work by rectifying the AC to DC and then converting the DC back to AC
at the frequency needed for the speed you want.
When you are using a 3PH in VFD on single phase, you are only using one bank
of the rectifiers to produce all of the current.
