Your OK with this but I don't understand the metal band. What you don't
want is any sharp or hooked items that can injure the horse or catch his
bridal.
Instead of the band, why not consider a thick, decorated escution on the
front and back of the post to mount the through bolt. This could be a
unique shape (maybe a diamond) with surface and edge texture. The thru-bolt
could be a ball with hole through it for the ring then an upset shoulder to
rest on the front escution. You could use a nut on the back plate or just
thread it and turn the whole ring/bolt until tight with a decorative cap nut
on the other end. I would want the bolt to be 1/2" dia min.

Subject: [TheForge] Hitching post
I have a customer that wants me to make the hardware for a hitching post to
decorate the front of his shop in a historic village.
I don't know anything about such things, but my idea was to have a metal
band to go around the top of the post and steel ring hanging from it. I'm
thinking I can attach the ring either with a "U" bolt or an eye bolt using a
fluch rivot in the inside of the band.
Anyone have experience with such things or access to original pieces.
I thought maybe a lawn jocky sculpture, but that was way out of his budget.
