I avoid forge welding. Forge welding seems to have become THE TEST for 
blacksmiths. Too bad that so many are so obsessed with it.

I will use a rivet if possible. A rivet adds more character to a piece 
than a forge weld when it can be used.

  But where a rivet won't work a mig weld will. A mig weld is probably a 
better weld, is predictable, is easy, and if you're careful the clean 
up isn't a problem. Also you don't have flux leaking out later causing 
a mess.

But there are still those who will look at a piece and pass judgement 
on it based on whether it was done the 'real' way.

Too bad.
