I love my NC Whisper Momma.
Building your own blacksmith widget, vs buying has been hashed over a
few dozen times on other subjects as well. For example, forge your
own tongs vs buying tongs.
Five years or so years ago, Charlie Orlando was
demonstrating basic blacksmith for UMBA in Baraboo Wisconsin using
his purchased 2 burner gas forge. A month or so later I was the
proud owner of a new "Whisper Momma" : I was super happy because I
could turn on the LP, hit the igniter, and have cherry red steel in
a few minutes, EVERY TIME. My whisper momma turned out NOT to be
the brand that Orlando praised, but it sure works.
My 20 / 20 hindsight would have me buying a good gas forge back
20 years ago. I am not a Ron Reil nor a furnace man. For me
trying to build my own "working" gas forge, was a frustrating waste
of time. Best way for me would to be part of a blacksmith
"hammer-in " kind of event where a demonstrator coaches a group
build , so each participant comes home with new "home made " gas forge.
