Well, its easier than what I was thinking--I just saw the movie
Gattica, in which there is a really cool spiral staircase on a buge
i-beam helix at the outer edge. You'd need the roller of the gods to
build it. But if you start from the center it sounds doable. Send pix
when you get it done!
