That's "milk thistle, "Silybum marianum" (whence the chemical name,
presumably).

Silymarin comes from the seeds.  

I know no more than that, but it shows up on pharmacological websites,
so there's some interest out there...

There's a herbal supplement commonly called "silymarin", a powder of
milkweed thistle (whatever that is) that helps the liver shovel out
the
heavy metals. I know a whole shop full of lithographers who use it to
keep
the inks from making them sick. I use it, too, since I was exposed to
HM's
for some years.
