It seems that old tools are the way to go anymore, with but few
exceptions. I'd still buy a Hardinge lathe or a Schaublin (if they were
still in business).
Files are another area to buy old. Most of the old top line file
makers are now either making crap or products that are notably less fine
than in the old days. Grobet used to make files that were like works of
art, no joke. They are still good (and in fact much much better in
recent years for reasons I am not privy to) but there was a time when
you couldn't give them to me. Old Grobets, Dicks, Hellers,
Nicholsons... those are the ones to grab up, store properly, and treat
like gold.
I have an old Porter Cable A3 belt sander. Built like a brick
shithouse. For $10 I couldn't pass it up. :)
