By log dog, do you mean Andirons, for holding logs in the fire? or do 
you mean a giant staple for holding logs while they are being sawn? 
Giant staples, I havent made em, but on the old keenjunk, which 
unfortunately is no longer searchable, there was some discussion of 
this, and I seem to remember 1/2" to 3/4" square, and yes, since you 
beat on em pretty good with a hammer, a low carbon steel a few steps 
above mild would probably be good. Hardened and then tempered. Nothing 
fancy, just a 10 series would work.
