Lon,

Couple years back I watched Jim Batson demonstrate making powder damascus
with the hydraulic press. Bought a copy of his book on making hydraulic
presses from him. First item in Jim's book talks about making your Forge
Press ..beginning with a log splitter.

So I went to a farm auction that had a log splitter advertised on the
auction bill. All the blessings of North Iowa/ Southern Minnesota aside,
there aren't a lot trees blocking our horizon. Just the odd surviving
trees in a farmstead grove. There are fewer log splitters. The log
splitter turned out to be a massive thing built to fit on the 3 point
hitch of a farm tractor. I was disappointed and didn't bid, but in
retrospect, I should have.. as it sold about $80 and the 6 inch cylinder
and valves, etc .. Oh well. Ever since I have wondered if anyone just
uses their farm tractor to be the "pump" for their forge press.
