[TheForge] Suggestions, please

We take credit cards and run them at the end of the day. Have not gotten a
bad one yet (3 years). Most of our CC sales are less than $100 so it
wouldn't kill me if we took a bad one. If we sell a big ticket item on CC
we try to call it in right away. We have had one bad check and it was from
another suttler that I made some custom shelf brackets for. We did
eventually get our money but it took a lot of calling.
I second the suggestion to bring along a sales person. It is really hard to
take care of customers and put on a demonstration. The only real problem we
have had with theft has been with young boys, if there are several of them
miling around I stop working and help my wife watch, they usually get the
message that they can't pull anything, and move on. Young boys are also
some of the best spectators, some will watch for hours. But if they are out
front and not back where the product is I don't worry about them.

RE: Credit cards
If you take credit cards, NEVER complete a sale unless you get approval
from the CC company. One day this decent looking guy comes to my
friend's booth at Saturday Market in Portland. He oogles this piece of
jewelry and his wife oogles that. He buys on a card. Shane had to
call in the number on his cell phone, but for some reason he could not
get through, so he finally relented and let the sale pass. Turned out
the card was stolen and he was out $300. And they looked like nice,
regular folk.
Be careful because the bad ones look nicer than the honest ones.
