You need to re-read it, the person is not the balancer.  There is a 
miniature pendulum and gyroscope that monitor its vertical orientation.  
These inputs are used to adjust motor/wheel speed to keep the thing 
verticle.  If it is tipping forward, it accelerates, bringing the wheels 
back underneath.  If it is tipping back, it slows the wheels down.
