[TheForge] on death and dying.OT

Well, I just happened to go over to the brother's house last night. Got
some facts and figures.

His leg braces are $3,000.00 per pair. And insurance does not cover them.
They are fiberglass reinforced plastic and made to fit.
His wheel chair is $4,000.00, and was made to fit him. A "transfer wheel
chair," the generic type, he says goes for about 1 k.

A powered wheel chair is about $25,000.00

He recently bought a wheel chair accessable van conversion. It ran on the
order of $25,000.00, and it was used.

Also standing in a harness, just hanging there, is right out<G>.

However, things can be made to work, it ain't all bad. Just expensive,
unless you are a do-it yourselfer. We've been reworking the bathrooms at
his home, and the floors. Built a place to store food that he can access
easily. Soon, working on the kitchen cabinets. Ahhh. I love the sound of
a saw, and sawdust in the nostrils<G>.

Inspired by Sci-Fi stories I've thought about some sort of base with enough
mass that would allow the user to basically be standing. The main problem
is that the massive base is at odds with most ideas of making the frame
lightweight enough for most efficient use of motive energy.

Even something like the ergonomic stools I used to see in the '90's where
the user is kneeling with the butt a bit higher might be an improvement.
