Mark,

That sounds like a cutting technique you can get away with, most of the
time.  But I don't want to be there the one time when the cutoff wheel
catches the saw chain and whips it around...

I have cut bicycle chain using a hammer, cold chisel and anvil.  One blow
and it's cut.  I've also used a bolt cutters to do the same job.
