Mark,

That sounds like a cutting technique you can get away with, most of the
time.  But I don't want to be there the one time when the cutoff wheel
catches the saw chain and whips it around...

I have cut bicycle chain using a hammer, cold chisel and anvil.  One
blow and it's cut.  I've also used a bolt cutters to do the same job.

Do you have any suggestions for the cut lengths?

How do you suggest cutting it?

I cut mine into thirds, or whatever will come out even. A longer chain
might
yield you more pieces or less if shorter. I use a cut off disc that is
mounted on one side of my buffer. Probably not recommended by most, but
I am
a daring young man...ha. Just hold firmly and cut...
