Hi Don, I'm glad to hear your thoughts on Lucian's article. He's a good
friend and I'm always amazed at how talented that young fellow is ever time
I see his work. It was great to see his work in the ring and his modern
masters film on TV. He showed me that chess set last year, and I said he
should send that into the ring........glad he did.
He's been working on a hardware line for a couple years now with jigs,
fixtures and items to list in his catalog. The hardware is beggining to
sell for him now - so it's beggining to pay back the time he spent setting
it all up.
The pictures in the article were taken by a professional photographer that
he hired. They are also used on his web site. Also on his web site are some
great vidios if you have some decent data transfer rates. I'm on dial up,
so I had to view them up to his shop last week when I went up to visit.
I would hope folks will be asking him to demo for their group soon. He's an
awesome teacher and an avid blacksmith supporter. His energy and enthusiasm
for the craft are really refreshing. He is 25 years old, and is one of the
most pleasant people you can meet.
If your group wants to ask him to demo and you call and he starts being all
humble and all.........don't listen to him. He's worth every second of
watching his technique on traditional metalworking, hardware, design, and
his approach to smithing. He's also an excellent tool maker.
I hope he sends in the pictures of the 90 feet of railing he's doing on a
river front wall, and the fireplace surround of vines and floral elements
he's currently working on. Some of his garden gates have been real works of
art as well. He uses traditional joinery and is always coming up with
unique methods of fastening things together. One of his gates had a real
nice split rail with square halves that riveted together over the gates
width. I'd never seen anything like it, but it really looked good in the
gate, and made it so it could be assembled easily with all the wide toped
floral elements in the top of the gate.
Ralph
