Chisels, my 2 cents,. Use spring steel for all large flatters fullers and
large butchers. Quench the working 1/2 inch end in oil (when above
magnetic), no need to temper. For all cutting chisels small impression
punches and small butchers use S7, quench in water than temper back to
rosey brown (just before blue). For all copper and light gage steels use W1
drill rod stock it is cheap and holds up well. Quench in water and temper
to rosey brown. For round chisels that require that you file them after
they are annealed use O1 annealed in vermiculite, file, shape , then quench
in oil for the large tools (larger than 1/2 inch), and water for the
smaller ones, tempering back to rosey brown. (It is better however to use
S7 annealed in one of the ovens that the knife-makers have with the correct
formula, S7 can be annealed to butter and is harder than O1). For long hand
held hot cutting tools use H13, it air cools and does not need to be
tempered and cuts mild steel great, just never use them on cold work. A lot
of the cheep cold punches you find at the flea markets work good tempered in
oil but just don't try to work them on cold stock as they will mushroom.
