Might've been me but I'm not the only proponent of vertical stock storage. The
only drawback being the need to shorten the stock if you don't have a 21'+
ceiling.
My new shop is 14' at the eves so I'll have to cut stock for vertical storage
and I HATE cutting stock till I need to. <sigh> The connex will go about 10'
from the shop along a long side and eventually have a roof between them so
I'll have covered horizontal racks there.
Controlling cutoffs is always morean issue with me than full length stock.
I've logged a number of techniques mentioned here and will offer my thoughts.
I've been collecting square kitty litter buckets and will make a rack or three
to hold them. I prefer square for space saving reasons and like plastic
buckets cause they're cheap.
Father used to keep cutoffs laid out in a dedicated area on the shop floor. It
was arranged according to diameter and metal/alloy. He didn't have long
lengths so it was pretty practical. He was also a metal spinner and this was
stock for making tooling so it was also not a large quantity. A good onsite
selection was all important.
