Charles,
That has been one of my considerations.  If one of the previous repairs was done with nickel rod, will that interfere with my cast iron filler rod?

I will try to weld it first.   If I cant get a good weld then I punt and
braze it.  You can always brazeup a failed weld on cast, but you can't
weld it after an unsuccessful braze....
