Frosty,
 The piece I'm going to weld is more like 1/2 X 1" bar stock rather than plate.  So I think gas welding should go okay.

I've never welded cast with gas so I have no input or opinion. What I have
used is 92% or better nickle rod, Welco-92 for instance, as a minimum. Grind,
scarf, clean, clamp, preheat, stitch, fill, ping and relieve, post heat and
slow cool. I've had pretty good success when I was meticulous about following
the steps.
