[TheForge] welding cast iron

Pete,
I had considered the possibility that a stronger forged replacement might result in something else breaking. However, mine will be at least the third repair to the original part. My break occurred at the margins of a previous weld repair. (Maybe poor pre and post heat.)
I'll check with my welding supplier for the cast iron rod and flux. I've heard mixed stories about the physical properties of a brazed joint. Some say it can be stronger than the base metal; others don't say this.
Hmm. I'm still wavering between brazing and cast iron welding. The oxy-acet. torch is the only thing I've decided on.
Aubrey

That feed ratchet arm came broken on my post drill too.
Could it be that that is an easily reparable weak link in the
system and that replacing it with a stronger forged one will do
more damage when the next screw up happens?
A normal oxy-acet torch and cast iron flux with the cast rods
works fine with sufficient preheat on cast iron.
Brazing rod shrinks at a different rate than the cast and can add
stress to long joints.....Pete F
