I do have an auto darkening hood, and it has helped enormously.  Now, at least I can strike the arc in the general vicinity of the joint.  Before, unless I had a very bright work light, I never really knew where I was starting.

My welding took a real leap forward when I got an automatic darkening
welding hood. Being able to see what I was doing made all the
difference.
