I just put one of those stock tank heaters in my 30-gallon slack tub.  
Its thermostat control keeps the water from freezing in any weather  
here in NE Ohio so far.

It's a good idea to keep a small fan running in your shop to keep the  
air circulating. The warm (compared to air temperature) water will  
raise the humidity to the point you get hoarfrost on any exposed  
piece of metal in the place otherwise. Keep any machinery lightly  
oiled too. (The one place where WD-40's tendency to gum up is useful.:)

You can always clean off the gunk when the weather warms in the  
Spring and it's a whole lot better than cleaning off rust! :)
