[TheForge] Forge is up!

Dan,

Maybe I read too much into it, but he said he heated some spikes and a
broken file and beat on it. I took this to mean he split or grooved the
spike and forge welded the file in to make a skinner... plain rr spikes make
good oyster knives, letter openers, steak turners, etc, but I have my doubts
that a blade of 1030 steel would hold an edge long enough to skin and
butcher an animal of any size.

Kent, just what did you do?

Ron C

The spec data sheet I saw showed
HC to have a maximum carbon content of .30%.
Yes there is documentation, somewhere.

I didn't catch where he "steeled" the spikes.

Dan,

Is there a spec sheet on this? I have heard the newer rr spikes, so-called
"high carbon" are 1050.... I also heard the "HC" on the head means "highway
crossing"; supposedly harder steel. This came from a self-ordained spike
expert. I have some really old ones that are wrought iron and a bunch with
no markings which are purported to be mild steel. The smaller spikes are
definitely not hc. Anyway, Kent did it right by "steeling" the spike with
real high carbon steel.

Had a great time at the OBG meeting last Saturday; went home and fired up
the forge. Heated up some railroad spikes and a broken file, then beat on it

for a while. Drew out a tang and forged in some bevels for a nice little
knife...maybe a skinner. (LOL) It do have a bit of curve to it, but I'll
straighten it out.

Have a question for ya'll, though. What kind of steel do they use to make
railroad spikes?

Thanks,

Kent White
